We start with your
deadline (if you have one) and construct a timeline backwards. The
writer gets the first half; the editor gets the other half (that's what
experience has taught). For efficient use of time and economic use
of funds, decisions on process and format should be made ahead:
- What length report?
(text only - or also front and back matter?)
- What software and
version? (important for compatibility with others)
- If text is reviewed by
peers after being edited, any changed text may need to be re-edited.
- Any graphs, charts,
tables, figures? (already formatted or generated by editor from
data?)
- Footnotes?
Endnotes (pre-checked for accuracy and completeness or will editor do
that?)
- Is the cover design and
report title and subtitle set in concrete?
- Running header or
footer on page design?
- Hierarchical use of
heads and subheads?
- Any Front Matter?
(preface, foreword, introduction, acknowledgements, dedication, list
of tables, list of illustrations, abstract, acronyms)
- Any Back Matter?
(appendices, index, afterword, glossary, bibliography, author note,
author bio)
- If indexed
(recommended), will the words be compiled or done by editor?
- Clipart or other
graphics (photos to be scanned and/or cropped)
- Tables, figures, bar
graphs, pie charts to be generated from quantitative data?
- ISBN or copyright to be
obtained?
- Will permissions be
needed to quote? Will someone get them?
